   THE HISTORY OF BRAUNTON RAILWAY

Braunton Parish Council together with a working group of local railway enthusiasts have established some information boards in the villlage to commemorate the former railway in Braunton. Braunton was the home of the largest station between Barnstaple and Ilfracombe which opened in 1874 and closed in 1970. Memories of this busy and important station still lie deep within the heart of Braunton.

A working group of local railway enthusiasts was set up to help the Parish Council to research and locate material to record historical and photographic details of the railway and the first board was installed on Friday, 5 June 2009. To complement the board, a further four smaller information panels were installed to show the original sites of Station House, Braunton Signal Box, The Sidings and Braunton Gates, all positioned in and around the main car park. The Braunton Gates panel is kindly sponsored by Marilyn, Allison and Ken Abbott whose father was one of the last Station Masters at Braunton Station and is dedicated to all Braunton Railwaymen.
